Tips & Tricks

  • Finding food that packs well and tastes good too can sometimes be difficult. Sandwiches are easy to make and eat while backpacking, but the bread always gets smooshed! Instead try bagels or english muffins. Peanut butter is a nutritous food to bring along. Save packets of honey or jam from fast food places (like KFC) and you have a quick peanut butter and jam/honey sandwich. Tuna is now packaged in easy to use and very compact packets. Bring along packets of mayonnaise and pickle relish (can be found in convenience stores that have food areas) and you have a quick tuna salad sandwich. Salmon is also being sold in these little foil packets. Adding the salmon to freeze dried backpacking meals or pasta combinations (like those from Lipton) makes a nice little gourmet backpacking meal -- not to mention making the freeze dried meals a little more palatable! Just be sure to be careful with the tuna and salmon in bear areas, they may just want to join you! Once you get to your campsite you can put some of this packaging in the fire to burn it down. Some things may not completely burn so you need to pick these out after extinguishing the fire and pack them out with you.

  • Here's one! Have you ever found yourself out in the wilderness trying to conserve your last drops of water? Did you run out? If you live in an area where birch trees grow you're in luck! All you need to do is take your pocket knife (you did remember that, didn't you?) and make a small hole (about 1/4") into the tree. Hold your canteen up to the hole to catch the water that comes out. This really does work! While I had to stand there for about 20 minutes, my liter of water sure was worth it. Some species (yellow birch) even have a slight wintergreen taste!

  • Need a lightweight firestarter to bring backpacking or even on a day hike. Dryer lint! Instead of throwing the lint away after laundering and drying your clothes, stick it in a Ziploc bag to have the next time you go.

As this is a new site and still under construction, there are currently few tips up. However, we'd love to hear any tips or tricks you may have connected with enjoying the outdoors via sports such as hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing, skiing, or just about any other outlet you may have. Maybe you have some great backcountry recipes, tips on photographing wildlife, tracking wildlife. If it helps someone enjoy their activity a little more it is certainly welcome. Tips may be edited for content, spelling or grammar. There is no monetary compensation for tips, but you may provide a link to your site (approved by editor) and an e-mail address if you wish. A link back to this site is also welcomed. Sumbissions may be sent to webmaster@enchantedoutdoors.com.
